Social Concerns Committee
Mission:
The Social Concerns Committee's
mission is to 1) plan activities to raise the consciousness of parishioners
about the Church's social teachings, social needs, and issues in the parish and
community; and 2) to involve others in social ministry. Social ministry is
two-pronged -- it involves direct service to those in need, and social action,
or working for justice to change conditions that cause suffering and
oppression. The Social Concerns Committee works closely with other
committees, organizations, and parishioners to promote social concerns education
and social ministry.
Activities:
Working with other groups and churches, the committee coordinates programs and
activities to respond to human and social issues. It also communicates
with the Archdiocese and the community to develop a broader vision of social
ministry.
Annual activities include the Lenten meal during Lent and the annual Christmas Giving Tree. The committee selects a different charitable organization each year to receive the gifts from the Christmas Giving Tree. These gifts enable many families to celebrate Christmas.
Membership:
Parishioners involved in social ministry through other organizations are
welcome. To achieve committee goals, members must be able to plan and make
sound decisions, be kind-hearted, and be willing to work to make a
difference. Parishioners are encouraged to develop and participate in
community action programs that address social issues and human needs. The
Social Concerns Committee meets the second Sunday of every month except July and
August. To become a member, or to find out more, please email
the parish office.
